iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod

On a iPod model MC540LL/A running iOS 6.1.6 I get this alert:

iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod “Carl Carlson’s iPod”. Go to the Summary tab in iPod preferences and click Restore to restore this iPod to factory settings.

There is no such Summary tab nor Restore.

I do have

Restore all Settings

Erase all Content and Settings

plus several others which don't appear relevant.

Which is appropriate?

Thanks

iPod touch, iOS 6.1.6

Connect the iPod to your computer and restore via iTunes

Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support

You can then restore from backup:

To restore from backup see:

Restore your device from an iCloud or iTunes backup - Apple Support

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204184

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:

Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
